A botanical garden in the Xinglong area with tropical plant collections and a history of research and education.

LISTEN TO THE PLACE

A story worth knowing

At Xinglong Tropical Botanical Garden, begin with a simple question: how many plants do you know only in processed form? Daily life brings us drinks, spices and finished products, while the tree, shrub or climbing plant behind them remains unfamiliar. Here, something ordinary may become surprising for the first time.

The garden is in the Xinglong area of Wanning. Its history involves the study of tropical plants as well as providing an attractive place to walk. Research and public interpretation exist alongside each other. The collection is therefore not a random assembly of impressive greenery, but the result of selection, cultivation and observation.

Do not hurry to turn the visit into a list of names. Choose a clearly labelled plant and examine it as a whole. Where is its stem? How are the leaves arranged? Are flowers or fruit present at this particular time? Then compare what you see with the product you associate with the name. The difference between a living plant and familiar packaging can become the most memorable discovery of the visit.

Remember that a tropical garden is not the same as an untouched forest. Paths, spacing and the arrangement of neighbouring species are human decisions. Many plants in botanical collections originate in different parts of the world. Their presence on Hainan tells a story about the island’s growing conditions, but also about the movement of knowledge, seeds and cultivated crops.

Compare several leaf shapes or forms of growth. There is no need to explain every feature as a response to one simple factor: plant life is more complex than that. Comparison nevertheless teaches you to see variety where there was previously just a mass of green. After such a walk, even ordinary planting along a city street may become more interesting.

Do not pick fruit or taste leaves on the strength of a guess. A familiar common name does not guarantee that you are looking at an edible part in an appropriate condition. Use the interpretation and ask staff instead. Before leaving, choose one plant you will now imagine differently. Xinglong can then remain with you beyond the photographs, reappearing when you make a drink, open a jar of spice or encounter a product whose living history you had never previously noticed.

Learn more

A botanical name identifies a plant more precisely than a common name. Different countries may use the same everyday word for different species, while one species can have several local names. Photograph both the plant and its label. That pair is more useful than an isolated picture of leaves that becomes difficult to identify afterwards.
