A story worth knowing

Within the Archbishop's Court in Novgorod's Kremlin stands a building that challenges familiar expectations of medieval Russian architecture. The Archbishop's Chamber, also called the Faceted Chamber, draws on the Gothic tradition more often associated with northern European cities.

Construction began in 1433 under Archbishop Euthymius. The chronicle records the involvement of German craftsmen. Inside, ribbed vaults make that connection particularly clear: raised lines organise the space into an intricate but ordered pattern.

Novgorod's archbishop mattered in civic affairs as well as religious life. His court expressed the wealth and influence of the local church, while ceremonial rooms accommodated important meetings. Such architecture reveals the city's international connections as vividly as accounts of traded goods.

The chamber changed over time. Later rebuilding altered façades and rooms, and conservation subsequently uncovered earlier features. Its exterior may therefore appear less surprising than the historical hall within.

The Novgorod Museum uses the building to display decorative and applied arts. If you visit, alternate between looking at the exhibits and looking at the room itself. Metalwork, textiles and church furnishings reveal craftsmanship at a small scale; the vault displays the builder's skill at a larger one. Together they evoke a city that combined local traditions with techniques from abroad. Plan an interior visit around the museum's current opening arrangements.

A rib is a raised element marking the lines of a vault. Ribs make its organisation visible while creating an expressive geometric pattern. Follow one from its support towards an intersection overhead. A complicated ceiling becomes a readable system, and Gothic becomes something you can recognise rather than simply a style name.
