A story worth knowing

The Vysotsky Tower lets you read Yekaterinburg vertically. At street level there are individual houses and intersections; from above they become part of a larger urban pattern. First, though, take a moment to view the tower from the ground, where the contrast between human scale and the building's height is strongest.

The tower opened in 2011 and rises more than 188 metres. Calling it simply the city's tallest building would be inaccurate: later construction changed earlier records. More interesting than the ranking is the moment when this kind of skyline became part of central Yekaterinburg.

The building is named after the performer Vladimir Vysotsky, and the complex includes a museum devoted to him. A commercial skyscraper therefore acquired a cultural association recognised by several generations. Engineering height and artistic memory now share the same name, despite coming from very different stories.

If you want to visit the observation deck, check admission arrangements separately. Visibility makes a considerable difference to the experience. This walking stop does not require going up: from the pavement you can compare the glass tower with the surrounding buildings and watch its outline change as you move.

From above, try looking beyond the famous landmarks. Follow the streets, green areas and water. A panorama helps connect places that feel separate during a walk. Returning to ground level afterwards can change your sense of direction: you know how the next street fits into the wider picture.

A building's full height is not necessarily the height of its visitor platform. Technical floors and other structural elements may be included in the overall figure. Comparisons between skyscrapers therefore depend on what is being measured. For a traveller, the more useful questions are where the viewing point is located and which parts of the city can actually be seen from it.

History

Ganina Yama

Ganina Yama lies outside a normal walk through central Yekaterinburg and requires a separate journey. It is a place of remembrance for Nicholas the Second's family and the people killed with them in 1918, rather than an ordinary architectural sightseeing stop.
